January 2016 2016: A New Year and a New Board A message from ILADS' new president, Dr. Samuel Shor, FACP:   As the newly elected President of ILADS, I am excited about new developments in the field of Lyme and tick borne diseases. I envision our organization taking a leading role in helping to validate our evolving understanding while promoting education of clinicians. This is exemplified by the acceptance of our guidelines on the National Guideline Clearinghouse. Clinicians, academicians, researchers, legislators and patients all have a stake in advancing our ability to manage these conditions. As president of ILADS, I hope to facilitate collaboration between these interested stake holders. In so doing, I envision advancing the science and compassionate care of our patients. There are three new members on ILADS Board of directors. Dr. Sam Rahbar, Dr. Phillip DeMio and Dr. Stephen Bock replaced outgoing directors Dr. Ray Stricker and Dr. Armin Schwarzbach and Dr. Leo Shea, (Past President). Farshid Sam Rahbar, M.D., FACM, ABIHM, is a holistic and an integrative gastroenterologist in Los Angeles. He practiced traditional gastroenterology until 2006, when he realized the need for bringing a functional model of care into his GI practice. He completed Integrative Medicine training and obtained ABIHM status in 2007 and subsequently completed additional training in Anti-aging, Functional and Regenerative Medicine and is board certification through A4M. Dr. Raber also completed functional medicine training through the Institute for Functional Medicine. He attended ILADS basic training in Oct 2013 and over the next 14 months his practice saw over 100 cases of Lyme and/or TBD presenting with GI manifestations. Dr. Rahbar has significant interest in areas of dysbiosis, SIBO, "leaky gut" and measures that help these conditions. Phillip DeMio, M.D., is Board-certified in Emergency Medicine and is also trained in internal medicine and pathology and laboratory medicine. Much of his research and clinical work involve the immune system in chronic diseases. He is the chief medical office of the US Autism and Asperger association and founder of the American Medical Autism board. Dr. DeMio has extensive experience in primary and acute care as well as the care of children and adults with neurocognitive disorders, autism, developmental disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, and many forms of debilitating illnesses. He completed ILADS physician training program and presented at the 2015 annual fall conference. The overlap of many chronic diseases with Lyme disease allows him to take his experience in these areas and to apply them to patients with Lyme and/or co-infections. Dr. DeMio has dedicated his life to helping people by providing care to his patients and he and his staff feel it is a privilege to do so. Steven J. Bock M.D., has been practicing the integrative treatment of Tick- Borne Disease for over 30 years , at his offices in Rhinebeck and Albany, New York.  He attended New York Medical College, graduating in 1971 and is a clinical instructor, where he teaches integrative medicine to medical students.  Dr. Bock is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine,  has been certified in Acupuncture for 30 years. He has authored 3 books, lectures locally and internationally and recently he has started a part time Tick-Borne disease consulting practice in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, California. In addition to President Shor, the returning directors are Daniel Cameron, MD (Past President); Tom Moorcroft, DO (President-elect); Christine Green, MD; Kenneth Liegner, MD; Elizabeth Maloney, MD; and Mualla McManus, Ph.D. Did You Know That... ILADS is actually two distinct entities. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) is a nonprofit, international, multidisciplinary medical society dedicated to the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of Lyme and associated diseases. The president and board are elected by the membership. ILADS primary strategic goal is to improve physician understanding of Lyme disease. The organization hosts several conferences throughout the year, including the annual fall meeting in the US, a European meeting in the spring and various regional events. The events provide ongoing physician education on tick-borne illnesses and are typically recorded so that providers who were unable to attend the live events can purchase DVDs of the scientific talks.   The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Educational Foundation (ILADEF) is an international non-profit foundation that promotes medical education and research related to Lyme and associated diseases and supports the educational and research goals of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society. The ILADS board elects the directors of the ILADEF board. The IRS granted ILADEF 501(c)(3) status, meaning donations to the organization are tax deductible. Proceeds from the Take a Bite Out of Lyme fundraiser went to the ILADEF.   636 papers were listed on PubMed in 2015 that were related to either Lyme disease, borreliosis or Borrelia burgdorferi. Healthcare providers commonly use PubMed to look for scientific papers on medical topics. 488 people registered for the fall conference in Fort Lauderdale and the revamped Lyme basics course had 261 attendees. View the entire conference photo album. Dr. Alan MacDonald received the Pioneer Award for his work investigating the correlation between tick-borne diseases and Alzheimer's, MS and other diseases. Check It Out Upcoming Opportunities of Interest Dr. Brian Fallon's group at Columbia University is about to launch a new study that includes comprehensive assessment of patients with chronic post-treatment Lyme pain as well as treatment. They're hoping to be able to find alternative treatment for patients with persistent pain who have already had considerable antibiotic therapy. The assessment includes multiple modalities, including a functional MRI and MR Spectroscopy component. The treatment involves two medication therapies - one that impacts the neuroepinephrine pathways for chronic pain and the other which targets the glutamatergic pathways. The assessments and treatment are free of charge to the patient.  More information is available at: http://www.columbia-lyme.org/research/cr_research.html.
